Cay Sal 2008

When we got down they stayed a decent distance away.  We swam to the wall and were amazed.  Sheer drop off into the abyss. A fantastic variety of fish, corals and sponges lined the wall.  Fish were everywhere.  Huge black triggers, beautiful queen triggers, huge groupers, French and Queen angels. We went over the edge to 143 feet and entered another world.  Words can not describe it. In the distance more and more sharks would appear, then fade off, all patrolling the drop off from 100-200 feet, all heading in the same direction.  We saw dozens.

Heading back we saw Robbie's line drop in the water and land at the base of a coral head.  Bam, a red grouper came out and took the bait and Robbie started reeling him to the surface.  Two huge barracudas came out of nowhere and headed for the grouper but gave up at about 30 feet.  A few minutes later Robbie let the undersized grouper go and it headed for the bottom.  This time the barracudas did not give up and he was gone in an instant.  5 or 6 fish joined in on the feast.  Seconds later the bait came down again and a big foot long black trigger took it.  Robbie started to reel him in and he was no more than a foot off the bottom when a big reef shark flew in and ate him whole, tail first, hook and all.  Now Robbie had a big reef shark on the line.  The blood and excitement brought in more and more sharks and we got nervous.

We all got out our knives and headed up.  We were at 15 feet for our safety stop, watching the frantic darting of the sharks looking for food and noticing the bottom was quickly devoid of fish life.  Then they started looking up.  You can see it in the pictures how they look up and head up.  3, 6, 9 more.  It was time to go.  We got in the boat, each one of us becoming more nervous at our place in line.

After we all got in the boat we all burst into our versions of what just happened.  Then the sharks stared hitting the little red ball we had floating at the end of our surface line.  The seriousness set in and we were all quiet for a moment.

On the way home we caught a big Bull Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) and a bunch of smaller ones and had a great time fishing.  The sun set over the weed line and we headed home.  I watched the radar closely and felt good to finally be in home waters.  But what a day...
